The Light of Tara, A Novel of Saint Patrick by John Desjarlais

John Desjarlais, captures the life of Saint Patrick with a new level of authenticity, and realism to draw in the contemporary reader.

Unlike the dry accounts from traditional biographies or history textbooks, this author actually recreates the life of Saint Patrick for the modern reader with new life.  The  fast paced narrative of this historical novel follows the trials and challenges, both spiritual and worldly of the well known historical and religious figure.  For those who are vaguely familiar with Saint Patrick through fables and religious anecdotes, this book will be an eye opening experience.  This novel is both entertaining as well as informative.  Desjarlais provides an in-depth glimpse into the historical details of daily life, education, as well as  religious beliefs.  The author goes deep inside, with depth into the thoughts, and motives, of the well developed characters he creates in the novel.  The solemnity of the culture  is respectfully captured, nevertheless, as the author inserts his own personal unique style as well.

Readers of all age groups will enjoy  this book. Educators and history enthusiasts will enjoy the rich historical content and the attention to detail. Readers who enjoy fast paced historical novels will also enjoy this novel too!   The author incorporates many authentic historical details in creating this epic account, bringing the life and times of Saint Patrick to the modern reader.  Reading this novel is certain to make the reader feel as if being transported back to Brittaniae A.D.412 or even Hibernia A.D. 406.

The end of the book features mini- biographies or an index of characters such Germanicus, Gladius, Senna and Lupita.   This book would make a additional great resource for any history curriculum.

Personally, I'd love to see this book as the inspiration for a television based mini-series.  Just about everyone thinks they know about the historical figure of Saint Patrick, but John Desjarlais would reveals the true, and most realistic account available.
